Jesus says that the birth he speaks of is one not of flesh but of the Spirit (v. 6). If one is born of the Spirit he is spirit. Jesus’ use of flesh (sarx) here is not the same as Paul’s use of flesh, where flesh refers to the sinful, enslaved nature. Rather, Jesus is referring to flesh as physical flesh.
